Mailata has the potential to be a long-term piece for this franchise. And, I mean, the Eagles initially signed Peters again to play the right keeper anyway. He took reps there in the training camp; bringing him back inside shouldn’t be so unthinkable. This change was clearly overdue. Apparently, Peters’ struggles against the Cleveland Browns have finally spurred anyone with the power to turn things around. (Jeffrey Lurie?)

That said, Wentz must ultimately be held accountable for his struggles. He was horrible. Accuracy has always been an issue and it’s no different this year as he ranks third for “on-target percentage”. He doesn’t get the ball out fast enough and that indecision contributes to sacks and turnovers. Wentz is playing so poorly that he definitely deserves to be put on the bench. (Apparently DK Metcalf agrees.) It doesn’t look like the Eagles are ready to make that move yet, but maybe other fights against the Seahawks will change their mind. It will be interesting to see if the attack looks just as bad with Jalen Hurts playing. It is very possible that this is the case! But Hurts’ success would further prove that Wentz deserves a lot of blame.

There is certainly merit in the argument that Wentz should be benched in favor of Jalen Hurts. But even if the team doesn’t bench Wentz, can Hurts at least have his own practice or two? You passed a second round pick on the guy. Can also see if he can kick off the offense in any meaningful way, rather than bringing him in for a 10v11 zone play play while Wentz stays on the pitch. But beyond potentially igniting the offense, as my podcast partner Brandon Gowton pointed out, there are scenarios where the Eagles could pick the top 5 in the 2021 NFL Draft. It’s not often that you pick this high in the draft, and if there’s a quarterback available that you just can’t pass up, don’t you at least want to have as much information as possible before you face that genre? decision? You know, again, maybe see what you got in Hurts?

Glad to see Jordan Mailata playing LT. The Eagles are on track to make the top 10. Do they need to look for an LT or can Mailata be that guy? My apologies to André Dillard for leaving him out of the discussion. Mailata is going to have its ups and downs, but that’s okay for a young man. Peters had his difficulties. There is no advantage with it. This is the last year of his rich career. You don’t sit down a young man with great potential to play Peters.
