Warning issued to millions of new iPhone users

Despite some display issues, early reports suggest that Apple’s new iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max are breaking sales records. But would-be modernizers might now want to wait as serious cellular issues are now being reported by thousands of homeowners.

First spotted by 9to5Mac, more than 500 iPhone 12 owners have told Apple’s official support communities forum that their phones (apparently all iPhone 12 models) are losing 5G and 4G reception, leaving them without connectivity even in strong signal areas. Additionally, when I delved into this issue, I found many similar threads with thousands of comments posted on Reddit threads for Verizon, AT&T and more, as well as complaints of signal drops on international carriers.

Describing the problem, affected users (spread as widely as the United States to Japan, India and the United Arab Emirates) claim that the receiving power on their new iPhones suddenly decreases before disappearing. For some, the signal can return in less than a minute, but for others, they have to restart their phone, switch to Airplane mode, or remove and replace their SIM card to get it back.

“For me, it’s almost like a clock. If you actively use your phone for more than 20 minutes at a time, you are bound to feel the lost signal. I have tried endless workarounds to no avail. ” – source

Interestingly, an affected Verizon store employee also confirmed that customers are now coming to the store to complain about the issue. Switching between towers seems to be a common cause regardless of the network, for others their signal disappears even when stopped. Unfortunately, some very unlucky iPhone 12 owners are also affected by both issues:

“It’s especially bad when moving (and changing turns). Even when I am stationary, the signal randomly drops to zero several times a day. Only airplane / restart mode can restore service, and I have cleared network settings a few times now. I am using a new AT&T SIM card provided by Apple. ” – source

While there is a bit of humor about the issue, the issues clearly affect a significant number of iPhone 12 owners. They also add to a larger pattern of cellular issues with the iPhone 12 lineup. iPhone 12 owners have been hit by widespread SMS issues while the latest version of iOS 14 (iOS 14.2.1) fixes issues with iPhone 12 models not receiving MMS messages.

I contacted Apple and will update this message when I receive a response.
