Google confirms that an update to the core algorithm, the December 2020 core update, is being rolled out today.
Later today, we’re releasing a massive core algorithm update, as we do several times a year. This is the main update for December 2020. Our advice on these updates remains the same as we discussed before. Please see this blog post for more: https: //t.co/e5ZQUAlt0G

As mentioned in the announcement, Google’s advice regarding the update remains the same as it always has been.
This is the third update to the base calendar year algorithm. Some time has passed since the last base update, compared to the average time between these types of updates.

The last base update was rolled out on what the internet calls “Star Wars Day,” also known as May 4th.
It is likely that the pandemic has delayed the rollout of Google’s next major update. As more time than usual has passed, could that mean that the impact of today’s update will have more impact?
We won’t know the answer to that question today, or even tomorrow, as the process of deploying a major update can take weeks.
Expect Google to post a tweet when the update officially begins rolling out later today, and another tweet a few days later when the rollout is complete.
General information on major updates
Unsurprisingly, the immediate response from the SEO community to the announcement of this major update is anxiety and panic. Although refreshing the basics of Core Updates can help alleviate some of the issues.

Let’s take a look at some of the reactions so far first:
All I need for 2020 to get worse is for Google to tank my sites…. If they do, I’ll just get a job at the local supermarket and be done with SEO haha

Historically, SEOs and site owners have assumed the worst when it comes to basic updates. While these updates are also opportunities for sites to be rewarded for their optimization efforts over the past few months.
This is especially true for sites affected by previous major updates. With a new main update, Google will reassess the ranking of content following changes to the site since the last update.
Sites that have worked diligently to improve their rankings may see a turnaround, so to speak. On the flip side, sites that haven’t made a concerted effort to optimize their content may see results reflecting that effort.
One thing is certain is that there will be a noticeable impact. General General Updates are designed to have widely visible effects on search results in all countries and in all languages.
Sites will inevitably notice drops or gains in search rankings when a major update rolls out. Changes in search rankings, positive or negative, indicate the relevance of the content.

If the content has become more relevant since the last major update, it is likely to be moved higher in the leaderboard. The opposite is also true.
Adding more depth to a piece of content is an effective way to send signals to Google about its relevance to particular queries.
Content may also end up being viewed as more relevant if there is a general shift in the interest of searching towards a particular topic. For example, content on business meetings can be considered more relevant now if it is geared towards remote work.
Then there is some newly released content that didn’t exist at the time of the last update. New content should all be reassessed against previously existing content.
