Airbnb doesn’t want house parties this New Years Eve.
On Thursday, the vacation rental platform announced that it would not allow some customers to book overnight stays for New Years Eve.
Instead, guests who don’t have great reviews on the platform will need to stay at least two nights in a rental, if they book an entire house.
The policy aims to deter people from hosting unauthorized house parties or large gatherings, which pose a high risk of spreading the coronavirus, according to the CDC – in their rentals during the holidays.

According to the announcement, the policy does not apply to “customers who have a history of positive reviews on Airbnb,” nor to people who have already booked overnight reservations because people who book rentals for New Years Eve of the New Year earlier “very rarely” detain unauthorized parties, according to the company.

The restriction is effective from Thursday and will apply to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France and Spain, according to the announcement.
If guests host unauthorized parties at their rentals, Airbnb said it could take legal action against those guests and remove their accounts from the platform.

This isn’t the first time Airbnb has imposed restrictions on overnight bookings to prevent house parties.
The platform banned overnight bookings in the United States and Canada over Halloween weekend, which succeeded in reducing the number of unauthorized parties, according to the announcement.
However, some hosts have said they want guests with a history of positive reviews to be able to make overnight reservations, which is why Airbnb has added a caveat to New Year’s bookings.
