Vulcan, a dorgi, is said to have died at Windsor Castle, leaving the British monarch with only one dog – another dorgi, named Candy.

A palace source told the newspaper that “clearly the loss of a beloved animal is heartbreaking.”

A dorgi is a cross between a dachshund and the corgi breed, famous for its distinctive short legs and erect ears and popularity with the queen.

In 2018, the Queen lost Willow, the last descendant of her original corgi, Susan, the dog she received on her 18th birthday in 1944.

She was said to have been so attached to Susan that she took the dog on their honeymoon with Prince Philip in 1947.

The Queen’s dogs have never shied away from the limelight – four of the Royal Dogs appeared with their owners on the cover of Vanity Fair in 2016.

The monarch even appeared alongside James Bond actor Daniel Craig with his dog Willow for a sketch presented at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

The Queen’s taste for horses and equestrian activities, including racing, is well known.

In June, she was pictured on horseback in Windsor, west London, in her first public appearance since the UK coronavirus lockdown began.

The 94-year-old Queen could be seen walking around Home Park, next to Windsor Castle, wearing a green jacket and colorful scarf.
