Gadgets don’t last forever, unfortunately for our bank balances, and it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S21 and other phones Samsung released in 2021 will drop support for some of the older Gear smartwatches.
As GalaxyClub spotted, a notification in the Samsung Members app now alerts users of the upcoming change. These portable devices will continue to work, but you will not be able to pair them with a Samsung 2021 handset.
Portable devices that would be affected are the Gear 1 (or Galaxy Gear), Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear S, and Gear Fit. There is no mention of the new Gear S2 or Gear S3, so we assume that support for these devices will continue into the next year.
Considering that the smartwatches and trackers left out all launched in 2013 or 2014, this move might not come as a surprise – although we have yet to receive an official statement or confirmation from Samsung. .
Over time
If you’re still using one of the old devices in tandem with a Samsung phone, you can continue until 2021, but you’ll need to consider upgrading your fitness tracker or smartwatch the next time you buy a new smartphone.
While the Galaxy S21 will be the first phone that Samsung unveils in 2021 – it’s said to launch on January 14 – there will of course be plenty more afterwards, covering all sorts of form factors and price points.
More modern options like the Galaxy Watch 3, which launched earlier this year, will see you through 2021 and well into the future if you’re looking for a replacement. There are also lightweight alternatives like the Galaxy Fit 2 for weighing in.
While it’s understandable that manufacturers can’t support older hardware forever, it’s still sad to see once-loved gadgets fall into obsolescence. Apple, meanwhile, still supports the original Apple Watch – although that smartwatch is only five years old.
