A Google Photos storage “error” this year resulted in image and video imports being “inaccurately” counted against your cloud storage quota. This Photos issue, which is now resolved, was present throughout 2020 and Google is offering a refund for One storage during that time.
The company, especially the Photos team, contacted those affected today, noting that this issue applies to a “limited number of people.”
They first establish that all downloads are secure and that the bug is only your “storage quota”. Users now get 15 GB free to share on Gmail, Drive and Photos, with a Google One subscription – from 100 GB – allowing more.
What happened: As of January 2020, we may have incorrectly counted photo and video imports into your shared storage quota between Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. These imports should not have counted towards your storage quota.
Google contacts customers who have “purchased or upgraded a Google One plan” on iPhones and iPads to find that their cloud storage space was full:
For example, you might have purchased a plan because we mistakenly informed you that you were running out of storage space.
Resolving this photo storage issue involves Google requesting a “refund from the App Store on your behalf for your Google One subscription fees from January 8 to October 20.” Google tells us that Android users have not been affected by this problem, just those on iOS.
Meanwhile, Google has since fixed the issue, with the storage counter in Photos and other proprietary apps reflecting precise usage. Those who received the email can contact Google One support if they need further assistance.
It will not affect the status of your Google One subscription. No action is necessary, but you can change or cancel your subscription if you no longer need the additional storage. You can log into your account to view your adjusted quota usage. Affected uploaded photos and videos will continue to be stored in the quality they were uploaded in, but they will not count towards your storage quota.
The news comes as Google Photos will end unlimited free backup next year, while files in Docs / Sheets / Slides will soon be posted to your cloud storage.
