Warner Bros. made history – and a lot of people angry – when they announced they were planning to release their next 2021 theatrical slate direct on HBO Max. While the idea is appealing to those who want to see great new movies from the safety of their own home, moviegoers fear it may signal the death of the theatrical experience. On top of that, the creatives – filmmakers, actors and beyond – feel betrayed and bored.
The availability of these streaming titles could have an impact at the box office (movies still get theatrical releases the same day they release on HBO Max), which in turn could hurt people financially (many actors and filmmakers receive an additional salary depending on the quality of their film (made at the box office). To add insult to injury, many people involved in upcoming Warner Bros. titles
Because of all of this, it looks like Warner Bros. could benefit rival studio Sony.
As we have already reported, the big decision of Warner Bros. to publish his 2021 slate on HBO Max has angered just about everyone in Hollywood. And apparently this is causing some people to take their business elsewhere. Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra recently Told CNBC (via The Verge) this “talent” called up Sony with hopes of working with a studio that won’t stream everything.
“The real benefit has been the number of inbound talent calls telling us, ‘We want to do business with you because we know you’re a theater distributor and producer,’ Vinciquerra said. “It worked really well for us.” Now, I don’t want to pretend Vinciquerra is making this up, but the story sort of has a ‘I have a girlfriend but you don’t know her because she lives in Canada’ vibe.
Still, it does make sense – Sony doesn’t have a streaming service to its name, and although they have already sold some streaming movies (like Doggy style, which went to Apple TV +), they’re less likely to dump an entire year of theatrical releases onto a streaming service. At least for now. In the meantime, there are some unsubstantiated rumors that some people involved in the upcoming WB movies are trying to defend themselves. The biggest rumor at the moment is that Legendary Pictures is set to take legal action with Warners over the release of Dune. Again: this is all guesswork and there is absolutely no confirmation. At least for now.
