Universal Television has joined CBS Studios and Warner Bros. TV in pushing a return to production after the current vacation break for Los Angeles-based shows that were scheduled to resume filming next week, the week of January 4.

NBCU studio extends vacation break from NBC comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mayor and Kenan, NBC Drama Good girls, Netflix comedy I have never and comedy HBO Max Hacks.

Production on everything except Brooklyn Nine-Nine will resume on January 11; the veteran detective comedy will begin filming on January 18.

The TV studios are responding to a call from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health which several days ago urged the film and television industry to consider halting production for a few weeks amid the continued surge in coronavirus cases across the county. Studios and streamers immediately began reviewing production logistics, including talent availability and whether cast and crew would be paid for the extra week of inactivity.

The start of the production lead-time while testing resumes brings productions into compliance with new Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines for those arriving in self-quarantine for at least 10 days after non-essential travel.

On New Year’s Eve, Los Angeles County reported a third consecutive day of record coronavirus-related deaths. The region recorded its 10,000th death from the virus on Wednesday. The county’s intensive care capacity is 0%. Earlier this week, the regional stay-at-home order for Southern California was extended to January 16.
