The 25-year-old son of U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) Has died, the congressman’s office said Thursday.
Thomas Bloom Raskin, second year student at Harvard Law School, is remembered as “pure magic” in a statement from his parents.
“His brilliance and compassion are limitless,” the lawmaker and his wife, Sarah Bloom Raskin, said of their son.
“He loved his family, friends and animals passionately and was devoted to the cause of the poor of the world. We are devastated and demolished to be without him.
The statement did not provide a cause or mode of death.
Raskin’s office said the congressman and his family were “grateful for the outpouring of support and love from neighbors, voters and friends,” but asked everyone “to observe strict COVID-19 protocols during this period of mourning ”.
In addition to his parents, Thomas is survived by his sisters, Hannah and Tabitha, his grandparents, Arlene Bloom and Lynn Raskin, and dozens of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, the statement said.
Tributes to the young man and condolences to the family poured in on Thursday evening.
“My heart is completely broken for my dear friend @RepRaskin, Sarah and their family in this devastating loss,” said New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.
“Tommy was an amazing, brilliant beam of light. All our thoughts are with the Raskin family, and we pray for support to wrap them around this unimaginable time.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan wrote that, “The First Lady and I express our deepest condolences for this heartbreaking loss.”
“I ask all Marylanders to keep the Raskin family in your prayers.”
Arrangements for funerals and memorial services will be announced at a later date.
