Bad news for Auburn Tigers fans on the eve of their Citrus Bowl game with the Northwest Wildcats. Auburn cornerback Matt Zenitz of AL.com Roger mccreary will not be available to play tomorrow.
Junior, McCreary has 45 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, six breakage passes and three interceptions in 10 games this season. He was a former three-star recruit for 247Sports of Mobile, Alabama.
Earlier in December, Auburn Undercover chatted with Dane Brugler, NFL Draft Analyst for The Athletic. Brugler believes McCreary could make the jump to the NFL after this season if he wants to.
“I can see him doing it (jumping to the NFL right now),” Brugler said. “He’s the most intriguing of this group (Auburn), in my mind.
At 6 feet and under 190 pounds, McCreary doesn’t have an elite frame for a defensive back. But what he lacks in size he covers – literally – with his speed and technique.
“He’s a good contraction athlete,” Brugler said. “I love how disciplined he is in his position. It trusts its speed, so it will press and carry the receivers vertically; sometimes it will perform the routes better than the receiver. So from what I’ve seen of McCreary so far, I’m really intrigued by what he can be on the next level.
McCreary virtually locked down a draft selection on Day 2 or Day 3 with his strong performance in 2020, and as Brugler said, an early exit from Auburn to take advantage of his performance wouldn’t come as a shock. The junior can still improve in some areas, although he has ticked most of the boxes for a future NFL cornerback.
“I think he needs to improve a bit with his trigger as a race defender,” Brugler said, “being a little more consistent in this area with reading his keys and sorting out what’s ahead. him in the racing game.
“But his ability to be an athlete and have natural covering skills for him, that’s what’s important to me.
