Program host Ryan Seacrest asked Biden and the future first lady what they would like to say to frontline workers in New York City and around the country who have worked to fight the coronavirus pandemic this year .

“My mom had an expression,” Biden said. “Bravery resides in every heart and one day it will be called upon. [In] the people we’re honoring tonight, it’s been called and they’ve come together and they’re brave, they’ve done so much, ”the president-elect told Seacrest.

“They risked their lives, they did so much for us and we owe them, we owe them, we owe them,” Biden added.

“We are very grateful for everything they have done. You know they left their families and their homes so that we and I can be safe – all Americans really appreciate what they did for us,” Jill Biden added.

Healthcare workers have always been at the forefront of the pandemic, and many nurses, doctors and hospital staff have lost their lives to the disease.

The Bidens address comes as the coronavirus continues to ravage the United States. The country has recorded more than 19 million cases of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic and more than 344,000 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this month approved the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for emergency use, and the federal government has been working to administer the vaccines to protect those most at risk, including including frontline health workers.

However, it looks like the Trump administration will fall short of its goal of vaccinating 20 million people by the end of 2020.

Seacrest asked the president-elect about his hopes for the new year.

“I’m more optimistic than I’ve ever been about America’s chances and I’ve been in this area for a while,” Biden said.

“We have the most productive workers in the world. We have now found vaccines available, and they will work if people can just find a better way to get them out faster. I find that we’re in a situation where we have to once again step up and make the world and lead the nation. “

He added: “The Americans can do anything and I am absolutely, positively, confident – confident – we will come back and come back even stronger than before.

“Things are going to get better, America,” Jill Biden said at the end of their remarks.
