George Clooney The Midnight Sky, one of Netflix’s biggest openings – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: This year especially, the bragging rights of the vacation at the movies should belong to the banners, as many large images fill the void of the vacation corridor emptied by the pandemic. The problem is, most of them resist transparency, even when the news is good. I’m trying to get information on a few movies, but here’s some news from Deadline got one of the big hits. The Sci-Fi Thriller directed by George Clooney Midnight sky is fast becoming one of the top movies on Netflix – with 72 million households slated to watch the movie in the first 4 weeks. Netflix has confirmed this, in addition to the fact that the success is global: Midnight sky achieved first place overall in 77 countries; and has been in the Top 10 in 93 countries – from Turkey to Argentina, Germany and Iceland (where part of the film was filmed).

In addition, the theatrical release Midnight sky was the biggest Netflix of the year. While this needs to be nuanced in light of how the Covid pandemic has sunk into the theater, Midnight sky played in over 800 venues in 16 countries, including the US, UK, Brazil, Australia, Spain, Japan and Mexico.

There’s a validation here of the Netflix Films program built under the direction of Scott Stuber, who over three years brought in talent he had relationships with when he was a director and film producer. When it happened, most of the big stars weren’t making streamer movies, but that line in the sand is long gone. Netflix started 2020 with star Chris Hemsworth Extraction, which has become streamer’s most-watched movie and has a sequel in the works.
