Throughout the pandemic, President Donald Trump has lashed out at his son-in-law Jared Kushner for being tested and wearing a mask, according to a New York Times report.
According to The Times, during a meeting of key Oval Office staff on August 19, Trump became angry at the increase in COVID-19 testing in the United States, which he blamed for a number of cases higher. “You’re killing me! That’s it! We’ve all got these damn cases,” Trump reportedly shouted at Kushner.
Trump continued, The Times reported, telling Kushner, “I want to do what Mexico does. They don’t test you until you get to the emergency room and you throw up.”
The report alleged that Trump viewed the tests “as a mechanism to make him look bad by increasing the number of known cases.”
Trump also criticized Kushner over the tests in preparation for the debate, according to the report.
“I’m going to lose,” Trump said according to The Times. “And it’s going to be your fault, because of the tests.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a statement to The Times, a White House spokesperson said the conversation with Kushner “never took place.”
“President Trump has led the biggest mobilization of the public and private sectors since World War II to defeat COVID-19 and save lives,” White House spokesman Brian Morgenstern told The Times.
