Sony Pictures Television is the latest television studio to extend the holiday production hiatus for its Los Angeles-based series amid an unprecedented spike in coronavirus infections and Covid-19 deaths in LA County.
Production on the studio’s ABC comedy series The Goldbergs and Netflix Atypical, which was scheduled to resume next week, the week of January 4, was delayed by one week, the week of January 11. Game shows broadcast by Sony TV Danger! and Wheel of FortuneWe are only due to resume production the week of January 11 and will start recording as scheduled.
Sony TV is delaying the start of production of Los Angeles-based shows to allow for further testing. Keeping shows paused during CV testing brings productions into compliance with new Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines for those who arrive in self-quarantine for at least 10 days after non-essential travel.
With its decision, Sony TV joins CBS Studios, Warner Bros. TV, Universal TV and ABC Signature and 20th Television from Disney TV Studios, which have also extended production huts on their LA series.
The studios are responding to a call from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health which urged the film and television industry to consider suspending production for a few weeks amid the continued surge in coronavirus cases across the county . Studios and streamers had considered the logistics involved, including the availability of talent and whether the cast and crew would be paid for the extra days of inactivity.
On New Year’s Eve, Los Angeles County reported a third consecutive day of record coronavirus-related deaths. The region recorded its 10,000th death from the virus on Wednesday. The county’s intensive care capacity is 0%. Earlier this week, the regional stay-at-home order for Southern California was extended to January 16.
