Everyone loved seeing Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen getting drunk in NYC

With most people staying home for New Years Eve this year due to the ongoing pandemic, there were so many more eyes than usual on the NYE TV specials. And CNN took advantage of the moment, dominating social media discourse by causing Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen to get drunk on air.

There were no crowds in Times Square this year, but otherwise these New Years specials went as usual. It created an odd vibe for the evening, and Cooper and Cohen very effectively exploited the country vibe by throwing pictures of tequila on TV while everyone at home did the same.

Cooper and Cohen started the party at 8 p.m. ET, with their first snaps of the night. And, well, it looked like Anderson probably could have used a hunter.

And things escalated from there as they continued to drink through the night. Highlights included Stephen Colbert calling for a photo with Cooper and Cohen from a distance, and a tour of Snoop Dogg in which the rapper discussed various public places he got high in – a conversation that made Cooper laughed hysterically. And let’s not forget the shadow that Cohen threw at New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

This tweet above from CJ Fogler is the start of a video thread of Cooper and Cohen throwing out plans, so if you want more of these videos, this is a good place to start.

This isn’t the first time Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper have spent New Years Eve getting drunk live on CNN, though it’s a fairly recent tradition. Given the overwhelming reception this show has received this year – the show was trending on Twitter all evening and into the late morning – it’s likely this is a tradition that’s here to stay.

It’s a formula that makes sense, especially for a year as little fun as 2020. There are few things a celebrity could do these days that could be more relatable to viewers than get drunk.
