Tanner Buchanan on ‘Cobra Kai’ and Ralph Macchio Season 3

As the Karate kid the films that preceded him, Cobra Kai relies on a delicate tension. And the crane kicks, of course. The delightfully retro-styled Netflix show features a new generation of martial arts upstarts, led by Miguel, now an adult in Season 3. We have to love him. His rival Robby, however, is Miguel’s candy. Not perfect, not hateful.

Except this season, Robby might be a little hateful. He unwittingly sent Miguel out of a school balcony at the end of Season 2, leaving the regular dojo colleague in the hospital struggling for life. Who, in the grand scheme of Cobra Kai, is to be expected.

Although the actor who plays Robby, Tanner Buchanan, still seems nervous about what’s to come. Maybe it’s because he’s from the Ohio countryside. Maybe it’s because he does everything his trainer tells him to do. Or maybe it’s because he really cares about Robby. Either way, we spoke to Buchanan about his worries and why he was rated as’ that guy ‘for’ 90s covers.

Your character Robby is missing. How was it?

I read this and was worried. I have had several conversations with not only writers [and] creators but with stunt coordinators. “Hey, I want to make sure Robby isn’t seen as a bad guy. It’s an accident, isn’t it? I disturbed them so many times.

Robby’s life seems very uncertain. How does he come back?

To me, it’s like Robby finally got a bad hand and he’s trying to figure out a way out. He’s trying his best to be a good person and not go the way his dad did and now he’s run off a bit and not sure if he really killed this kid or not. It’s all about redemption for him. He’s made all of these amazing relationships he never thought he would get and he doesn’t want to ruin it.

Hope Robby and Miguel can be friendly again.

Well who knows? I mean, it took Johnny and Daniel 36 years or whatever, so it could take just as long. We will have to wait and see

This show is going in wild directions. How does it feel to receive these scripts?

It’s really fun. We’ll be halfway between filming and getting the scripts – we can’t wait until lunchtime. Then we pull out our phones to try and read the new script. “What fights can we do?”

You are a boy from Ohio. How did you end up doing this?

Yeah, I’m from a little, little, little town in Ohio. It is basically a farming community – acres and acres of fields and farmers. It’s a little different [from Los Angeles]. You play sports.

I grew up with a lot of women in my life. I admired them a lot and they danced. I saw them and I was like, ‘hey, this is what I wanna do, I wanna dance.’ I started when I was five and went to a competition in New York when I was nine. The [were] agents and managers there. At that time I had a cut bowl and tall glasses and horse teeth. i was the Jerry maguire child. Pleasantly, agents and managers said that I had a very ‘character look’.

“We can do something about it.”

They would say, “Have you ever tried to act? My mother was not happy with her job, she would try to find a new one. My dad said to me, ‘He really wants to try, why not take him out for six months? We never ended up leaving.

You had the obligatory role of “Kid n ° 2” on Modern family.

[Laughs] You get a line and they don’t give you a name. But you get that line and you do it all day and act like it’s the best line ever.

How old is Robby? He looks a bit older than the other kids.

I had this conversation with someone… I don’t really remember Robby’s age. However, I know there is a specific plan with its license. I should go back and watch this to see how old he is.

Growing up in the 90s, Karate kid was essential. The show is so smart to recall those movies. What is your relationship with them?

I had seen the original film when I was probably five years old. My mom was actually a black belt in karate in the 80s. When I went out for Cobra Kai, I didn’t want to watch the movies. I wanted to bring my own version. After I got the part I talked to the creators and they were like, ‘Have you seen it? There are a lot of references. Why don’t you watch all three films before you get here to start filming? I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.’

Was it intimidating to occupy this world?

Well, that’s the great thing. [The older actors] also suitable. First of all [Ralph Macchio and William Zabka] are two of the nicest guys ever. Ralph is extremely nice. He’s too kind sometimes. I’m like, “Can you just say a bad thing?” They are very respectful and they treat us like peers. We’re here to do the same job and also be actors and they understand that and we understand our characters as well as they understand their characters. They let us do our own thing.

They give us advice. I had a surreal moment in season 1. I was supposed to wax, wax. I was like ‘wait, how can I do that’, and Ralph is like ‘let me show you’. I stepped aside. The Karate Kid actually shows me how to wax and wax. People would pay to show them how to wax and wax.

It’s wonderful to know that Daniel is as pure as we all imagined. Looks like your rival Miguel has swelled.

[Laughs] I feel like he looks the oldest of us all now.

Has your fitness routine changed?

Mine definitely has. I’ve always tried to stay in shape and train to stay healthy. I’ve never been so fond of this kind of guy. First of all, I’m only 5’8 ”. I’m not Chris Hemsworth who is 6’4 ” tall and weighs over 200 pounds of pure muscle. It’s not me and it’s going to be impossible for me to reach that height or weight. For Season 3 in particular, I ended up losing a lot of weight just for the sake of character. Now I have started to put on weight a lot, but I still try to stay really skinny because the character asks for it. I want to be ready for my character when I arrive to shoot season 4.

What are your favorite workouts?

Honestly, anything my trainer tells me to do.

Right answer.

Yep. It took me a while to pick a trainer, and we’ve had a lot of conversations about where I want my character to be. He basically shaped my training to be what I want my character to have.

I guess a lot of the fights we see are stunts, but you definitely make a part of it.

[The stunt coordinators] working really hard with us to get us to a place where we do 90-95% of all the fighting. So we’re here all the time and they’re working really hard with us to make it as real as possible. It makes things a lot better. I think the hardest part of everything is the stretch because we have to be really loose. It’s really necessary and we all try to work as hard as possible so that we can actually do these fights and they can get better shots.

I can’t not ask you to be in the next one He is all that [a reboot of She’s All That]. Are you the male version of the jerk getting a makeover?

Yeah, I basically play the role of Rachael Leigh Cook from the original.

So you’re both nasty losers who we think are really, really attractive.

Yes. [Laughs]

Did they give you the glasses?

We stayed away from the glasses. We didn’t feel like the glasses were necessary in the sense that you can’t just put the glasses on and take them off and say, ‘Oh, they were so ugly, and now they’re so attractive. ” [Laughs] We all agree, let’s try to stay away from that, and then we’ll do another huge makeover deal to make a bigger change rather than just putting on glasses.

You were also in Girl meets the world and More complete house. Are you aware that you have a brand of rebirth from the 80s and 90s?

I am aware of this. I do not know what it is. I must be the king of remakes. I must have a ’90s look or something.

Your look is for Generation X and Generation Y.

I’ll take it. I’m not mad at it.
