After decades of planning and three years of construction, Manhattan’s Moynihan Train Hall has finally opened its doors to commuters today. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the 255,000 square foot redevelopment of the historic James A. Farley Post Office building shines with a grand new lobby for Amtrak and Long Island Railroad service from Penn Station, filled with a 92 glass feet high atrium reminiscent of the original terminal. The new space, which was unveiled by Governor Cuomo on Wednesday, will help ease commuter congestion and improve train schedules and capacity.
The facility is located immediately across from Penn Station on Eighth Avenue and provides direct access to Amtrak, the Long Island Railroad, and six existing subway lines that serve the area. The project also included the addition of eight new rail tracks, expanded ticketing and baggage check-in areas, lounges for premium customers, a business center and free Wi-Fi.
The most impressive element of the installation is its glass canopy, which features four arched arches, each made up of 500 panels in a graceful metal frame. This bright room is an incomparable improvement over the narrow, labyrinthine hallways of Penn Station underground, and will make traveling to one of New York’s busiest corners a sunnier affair.
The public-private redevelopment was led by a consortium of entities including Empire State Development, Vornado Realty Trust, related companies, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Amtrak, and the New York and New Jersey port authorities. Skanska was the construction manager for the project, which started in 2017.
The lobby is part of a $ 1.6 billion project that will eventually include additional crossings, metro entrances and a variety of retail and dining options for waiting passengers.
