A Chicago Teachers Union leader is criticized for pushing Chicago public schools to stay away due to coronavirus risks while on vacation in the Caribbean.
Chicago Teachers Union regional vice president Sarah Chambers is against teachers returning to class and posted a photo that appears to show her poolside in Puerto Rico, WGN-TV reported. Chambers has since deleted his Instagram account, according to the station.

“Hearing about an educator revolution,” she wrote on Twitter Thursday. “Tons of members email their administrator: I will assert my right to continue working in a secure remote environment on January 4, 2021. I have signed the pledge, along with over 8,000 union educators, to continue working remotely[.]”
Chambers, a special education teacher and executive board member of the Chicago Teachers Union, appeared to respond to criticism of her trip on her Twitter account.
“I received 4 covid tests (2 rapid, 2 PCR) b4 coming here [and] wore 2 masks (N95), ”Chambers wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

“Scientists say planes are safer than grocery stores [because] planes have ICU level filtration [and] everyone wears masks. My doctor said it was extremely unlikely for me to have Covid again because I was in so much pain, ”she continued.
It wasn’t immediately clear when Chambers first contracted the virus, but she recounted her experience on her blog. She said she had to go to the emergency room three times starting in April after catching the virus.
Chicago Public Schools expect students to return to class on January 11 or later. Meanwhile, the Chicago Teachers Union has raised the possibility of a strike, WGN-TV reported.

“It would be human if, just once, the mayor and the CPS recognized the fear and concern of many educators and families less than a week before their scheduled reopening, and offered some solace,” wrote the Chicago Teachers Union on Twitter Tuesday. “‘Follow the science’ doesn’t mean much when your whole household has COVID-19.”
