People from all over the world usually gather outdoors on December 31st to watch fascinating fireworks displays. But with the continuing surge in coronavirus cases, the Seattle Space Needle decided to make the experience accessible from the inside out – and it was bigger, more trippy, and more dazzling than ever.
Instead of the regular fireworks display at the Space Needle, those responsible for the iconic landmark chose to create a digital light show experience that featured vivid visuals of life, science, and illusions that were out of this world. .
As reported on the Space Needle website, the organizers used sky mapping technology and video footage to create the show, which was only visible on screen. People who visited the landmark in person only saw the Space Needle illuminated in a magenta color.
Twitter users were quick to comment on how epic – and breathtaking – the New Year’s Eve celebration was.
Many Twitter users have likened the event to a hallucinogenic experience.
Others, however, have described the show as the product of an alien collaboration or the work of a sci-fi dystopia.
While not exactly a connection to life outside of this world, Terry Morgan, the visionary behind the show, told the Seattle Times it was the product of a living dream he had earlier. this year.
“I was half-conscious in the dream and the sky was just beautiful colors and beautiful faces, just floating like clouds in the sky,” Morgan told The Times. “And it was truly one of those vivid dreams.”
Morgan decided to pass the idea on to Karen Olson, COO and Marketing Director of Space Needle, and as the Times reported, the concept was developed in just a few months.
“It wasn’t something that had been planned for a year,” Morgan said. “Once Space Needle decided that they weren’t physically doing fireworks due to social restrictions due to COVID, that kind of situation really arose and became an alternative.”
Maybe it was just an alternative, but for people who watched the event, maybe it’s just the future.
