It’s no secret that Patty jenkins parted ways with Marvel Studios after a brief but divisive period Thor 2. Jenkins was originally scheduled to helm the Marvel sequel before stepping away from the creative differences (which would consequently earn Marvel star Natalie Portman’s wrath, before Taika Waititi took her back). This left to direct the tasks to Alan taylor, which would go on to become one of the least popular films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And Jenkins said in a recent interview that she saw the writing in the cards of what was to become Thor: The Dark World, which led her to leave the project.
In an interview with Marc Maron on the WTF podcast (via The Playlist), Jenkins traded in a few other war stories about his time on Thor 2, and why she ended up stepping away from the movie. She admitted that she was grateful for the opportunity Marvel gave her in 2011, but saw that she was on the verge of failure:
“It was said that I wanted to do a superhero movie and to Marvel’s credit – on a movie that didn’t require a woman at all – they hired me. So, I’ve always been very grateful to them even though it didn’t work.
They wanted to make a story that I thought wasn’t going to succeed and I knew it couldn’t be me [to fail], “she explained.” It couldn’t have been me who had done this. If they hired a guy to do it, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but I knew in my heart that I couldn’t do a good job. film with the story they wanted to do.
It is true that as a director Jenkins had more to lose. The filmmaker had received critical acclaim for her 2003 drama Monster, but a critical hit couldn’t make up for a disappointment at this point in her career, and studies have shown female directors have fewer second chances in Hollywood than male directors.
Jenkins would walk away from Thor 2, and Alan Taylor would step in to direct Thor: The Dark World, on which he would have his own bad experiences. But despite The dark world almost tank the prospects of a Thor franchise, the character would be saved by Taika Waitit Thor: Ragnarok, who reinvigorated the Norse god with one of the most critically acclaimed Marvel films, and would push Thor to become one of the most popular Marvel heroes. Jenkins has no hard feelings for the franchise and added that she loved the Waititi sequel as much as the rest of the world.
“It was such a good movie,” Jenkins said. “Taika is the most awesome person for Thor ever. It’s incredible. Ragnarok is one of the best Marvel movies of all time. So good and so executed.
In the meantime, Jenkins has no shortage of big, successful projects. She’s ready to lead Disney’s Thieves squadron, and a Wonder woman 3 and one Cleopatra film in preparation.
