New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has been placed on the Covid-19 roster, leaving his status as a player for Sunday’s regular season final to the Carolina Panthers in question.
Kamara, in his fourth season away from Tennessee, delivered a historic performance in the team’s Christmas Day victory over the Minnesota Vikings as he rushed for six touchdowns, tying a league record of 91 years.
Kamara carried 22 times for a career-high 155 yards (7.0 average), adding three receptions for 17 yards for 172 total yards in scrum against the Vikings. The race touchdown record equaled the record held by Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals, set on November 28, 1929, while for total touchdowns Kamara joined Nevers, Dub Jones of the Cleveland Browns (November 25, 1951) and the Bears of Chicago. Gale Sayers (December 12, 1965).
Kamara has carried 187 times for a career-high 932 yards (5.0 on average) with 16 touchdowns this season, tied for first in the NFL. He leads all running backs receiving with a career record and leading the team 83 receptions for 756 yards (9.1 avg) with five touchdowns. Kamara, who will only be the second Saints player to lead the team in both running and receiving, currently leads the NFL with a franchise record of 21 total touchdowns after his explosion of goals on Christmas Day , is ranked second in the league with 93 first downs and third at 1,688 career total yards since scrum, the seventh-highest total in club history. He is the only Saint to have been selected for the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons.
Kamara is the second player the team has placed on the roster this week, joining defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson.
The Saints (11-4) face the Carolina Panthers (5-10) on Sunday, Jan. 3 in the regular season finale. New Orleans, winner of the NFC South for the fourth consecutive season, still have a chance of becoming the No.1 seed in the NFC playoffs and cannot finish worse than the third seed.
