Manchester United player ratings

David de Gea: 7 – Great save by McGinn in the first half and made big claims in the second half. Solid.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7 – Two great moments. A bad time. Great run and cross for the first goal, but caught up with Villa’s goal as he tried to block the quick free-kick but was caught as he left his place and Grealish. Brilliant clearance to deny El Ghazi what looked like a clear goal.

Eric Bailly: 8 – Superb late block to refuse Davis, and erased much of the danger time and time again. The way United players celebrated with him at the final whistle said it all. He’s been away for a long time, so good to see him get rid of the rust.

Harry Maguire: 7 – Pretty solid exit as he went up close with a header and just did his job and defended well.

Luke Shaw: 6 – Some good points in the second half, but in the first half he was caught by Cash several times in a good battle on this flank.

Fred: 7 – Displaying combative, as always, and did his best to stop Villa’s attacks. Never gave up.

Scott McTominay: 6 – Not his best performance as Grealish definitely won the battle head to head.

Marcus Rashford: 7 – Nice shot for the first goal and did a lot of good wide work, especially on the right in the first half. Selfless display.

Bruno Fernandes: 7 – Has brought back his penalty and has come close a few other times. He generally had quality on the ball in the final third, but he didn’t see the ball much. One of his quieter games.

Paul Pogba: 8 – Very good display as he prepared the shot for the first goal with sublime skill, had amazing individual moments and was always free to cut through the left flank. Won the penalty for the winner and overall hit the ground but played a few passes too.

Anthony Martial: 8 – Got his goal well with a real poacher finish. I could have had a few more, but it was still a threat behind. Large center front display.

Substitution
Nemanja Matic (65 ′ for McTominay): 6 – Some sloppy passes, but did his best to calm things down.
Daniel James (87 ′ for Fernandes): 6 – Some lively races and kept Cash from advancing.
Axel Tuanzebe (90 ′ for Fred): N / A

Aston Villa player ratings

Emiliano Martinez: 8 – A series of fine saves to turn United down, and he looks like one of the best signings of the season.

Matty Cash: 6 – ran out of steam in the second half after a very good first half. Whipped in some large crosses.

Ezri Konsa: 6 – Pretty solid as he worked hard to lead and clear the balls.

Tyrone Mings: 6 – Will be disappointed with the first goal because he seemed to clear the center but missed it and Martial scored. Had a good time otherwise.

Matt Targett: 6 – Given a rough patch by Rashford but continued to hook.

Douglas Luiz: 6 – Awarded a penalty for clipping Pogba, and didn’t need to be so tight. Digged deep and involved everywhere.

John McGinn: 7 – Really solid as always, as he helped Villa set the pace in the first half. Great volley at the start that De Gea saved.

Bertrand Traoré: 7 – Took his goal very well and always provided a threat at sea.

Jack Grealish: 8 – Was brilliant in the second half creating multiple chances that his teammates couldn’t convert and creating Villa’s goal. United were so scared of him and messed him up so many times.

Anwar El Ghazi: 6 – I have been close on numerous occasions and kept popping up in dangerous areas.

Ollie Watkins: 5 – Lack of confidence but never gave up. Missed some big chances, but don’t hide. Not his night.

Substitution
Jacob Ramsey (79 ′ for Traoré): 6 – Used the ball well and settled directly into the match.
Keinan Davis (84 ′ for El Ghazi): 6 – He looked really brilliant and came close twice.
