Jon Gruden disappointed Trent Brown’s missed games, Raiders signed him to be ‘Lebron James of right tackles’

Late in last Saturday’s loss to the Dolphins, Trent Brown injured his knee. It was not immediately known as Brown did not miss a shot. He appears to have suffered the injury at the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter, but the play he was in there was a penalty, and he came back for the next play, so officially he played every snap.

Even though Brown hasn’t appeared injured in the past four games, his injury was apparently serious enough to cause him to miss training all week and be out for the season finale in Denver. Sam Young will replace him again on the right tackle.

So officially, Brown has appeared in just five games this season, one of them being the season opener in which he only played three shots before coming away with a calf injury. The team would end up playing reserve guard Denzelle Good for most of the game due to an injury to Young shortly after Brown left.

Brown would head to the injured reserve and return in week five against the Chiefs. Then a week later, he would test positive for COVID-19 and go back to the shelf. He would end up sending the entire starting offensive line to the reserve / COVID-19 list with starting safety Johnathan Abram due to close contact without a mask.

The 380-pounder struggled with the virus and, all in all, would end up missing two months even after he no longer had it. Losing him 12 games this season is not at all what his head coach was hoping for.

“It’s disappointing, without a doubt. It’s very disappointing, ”said Jon Gruden of Brown being so short of time this season. “We brought him here to be the Lebron James in straight tackles. He had a lot of adversity. He had injuries, a number of injuries. It definitely hurt our football team. But that’s part of this activity.

Gruden and the Raiders generously paid Brown to play the right tackle for them, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

His first season with the Raiders, Brown missed five games. Which means over two seasons with the team, Brown played a total of 16 games. He was paid $ 36.75 million for what amounts to a full season.

What that means for Brown’s future with the Raiders is hard to say. He’s still only 27 and Gruden seems to at least have plans to bring Brown back next season.

“We hope to get Trent back and be ready to ride for next season,” Gruden continued. “He’s a great player. He’s a great soccer player, he just needs to be healthy and stay healthy.

For what it’s worth, Brown owes $ 14 million next season with no dead money if the Raiders release or trade him.
