The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the default daytime car. There’s a good chance you’ll see at least one of these at any event you attend just because it does the job so well. Most people take this route because it’s easy and because the RS is so rewarding to drive on a closed course. But some people, like Phil Morrison of Driftworks in the UK, take a slightly different path. One that involves trading V-8s and fireballs.
Instead of just buying a track-ready Porsche or BMW for HPDE tasks, Morrison decided to build his own. It used an E30 M3 hull and swapped out the 4.0-liter S65 V-8 and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission from an E90-generation M3, creating a lightweight Bavarian missile on wheels. The classic formula of the big V-8 and small chassis equals mega performance is evident on the track.
At a recent event in Donington Park, Morrison stumbled upon a 991-generation 911 GT3 RS – the one with a 520-horsepower flat-six and quick-change PDK – and actually managed to follow it through the ride. session, both cars spending everything else on the circuit.
There’s plenty of action as the two cars ride Donington at high speed, with a seemingly endless stream of fireballs appearing out of the M3’s tailpipes with each downshift. You’re going to want the sound for this one.
