City officials shut down two parties on the eve of the year and issued seven advisories to businesses for violating COVID-19 restrictions.
But overall, the Department of Commercial Affairs and Consumer Protection reported a high level of compliance and a “relatively quiet night” of law enforcement as Chicago struck the bell in 2021.
City officials said they responded to 21 calls for violating COVID-19 regulations.
The toughest action has been taken against The Dugout, 950 W. Addison St., which has been closed until further notice after police and firefighters uncovered a “large rally of overcapacity,” the department said.
The city also shut down a party while it was being installed in a redeveloped auto repair shop at 748 W. 91st St. in the Brainerd district, officials said.
Four other advisories were issued to hotels allowing room or lobby overcrowding, including the Congress Plaza Hotel in the Loop.
Officers responded to the hotel around 10:35 p.m. in the 500 block of South Michigan Avenue and found at least one room that was over capacity, according to a police spokesperson.
The hotel received a warning, along with three others: the Best Western, 1101 S. Michigan Ave .; The Godfrey Hotel, 127 W. Huron St .; and EuroStars Hotel, at 660 N. State St.
Ahead of New Years Eve, the city has partnered with the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association to distribute regulatory notices to hotels to ensure compliance with COVID-19 regulations, the department said.
At least 370 companies have been cited by the city for violating coronavirus restrictions since the pandemic began in March. The latest batch of cases come about three months after the city was banned from eating and serving indoors in October.
