A targeting penalty against Clemson linebacker James Skalski in the second quarter of a college football playoff semi-final against Ohio State left fans bewildered and upset.
Skalski came like a heat-seeking missile into a scrambled Justin Fields with 5:57 left in the first half. On his tackle, Skalski leaned in with the crown of his helmet on Fields’ back. The Ohio State quarterback was on the ground for a few moments, gripping his back as officials surveyed the room.

Officials have determined that Skalaski should be penalized for targeting, which is automatic ejection.
Two games later, Ohio State extended their lead to 28-14 when Fields returned to the game and sent a touchdown pass to Chris Olave. Fields then walked off the field in obvious pain.

The play left fans a bit confused by the rules and whether the game should even be considered targeting.
Skalski was also sent off in the National Championship game last season for a targeting penalty against LSU wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

The winner of the Sugar Bowl game between the Tigers and Buckeyes will play Alabama in the National Championship game. Clemson lost in last season’s national title match against LSU. Ohio State has not played for the national title since the 2014 season.
