PUEBLO WEST, Colo. (KRDO) – The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office said two of its deputies were recovering after a standoff Friday afternoon in Pueblo West. The suspect is now in custody.
Officials say MPs first tried to contact the suspect on Friday morning in the 1000 block of Tenderfoot Lane. The suspect, who was previously known to law enforcement, had made threats against the Tennessee State Patrol and the Capitol building in Tennessee.
The sheriff’s office said authorities in Tennessee had asked Pueblo deputies to verify the suspect’s presence. After no response on the first attempt, a sergeant and deputy came out a second time around 3:20 p.m. to contact the individual.
On their arrival, the deputies say that they were immediately under fire and that they were injured. One of the deputies was shot in the head and the other in the left shoulder. Both MPs are expected to make a full recovery.
The sheriff’s office said the deputies were MP Berumen, 30, and Sgt, 40. Coarse.
The SWAT unit was called in because officials were unsure if there were more people in the house. The deputies fired a bullet with a non-lethal weapon and were able to neutralize the suspect, taking him into custody without being injured.
A spokesperson for the PCSO said the suspect was never known to act violently against MPs. The suspect has a history of mental illness and alcohol may have contributed to this violent encounter, according to the sheriff’s office.
MPs say the suspect, Eddie Lovins, is a veteran and is believed to be familiar with explosives. The Pueblo Metro Bomb Squad is in the process of securing the setting and obtaining a warrant to search the house. MPs will first use a robot to inspect the interior of the house for explosives.
Residents of the surrounding area have been asked to take shelter in place as the bomb squad investigates the suspect’s claims that his house is “wired”.
