We review LG’s 8K OLED TV

With little to do in your forties, watching a favorite show or movie on one of the many streaming services became a nighttime ritual, which then morphed into a heartwarming routine. There are a lot of words in the official name of LG 8K TV – officially titled “LG SIGNATURE ZX 77 inch Class 8K Smart OLED TV w / AI ThinQ®”. Being part of the 8K TV wave unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2020, the only thing you really need to know is that this is a TV beast, which will transform the way you see – and experience. – your content.

While 4K technology is fundamentally the new industry standard, when it comes to delivering shows and movies to your TV, a number of studios are starting to create 8K content as well. As the name suggests, 8K offers four times more detail than traditional 4K and 16 times higher resolution (7680 x 4320 pixels) than HD. We tested the LG SIGNATURE 8K 77-inch OLED TV, which incorporates LG’s popular OLED technology with the ability to display 8K resolution on a sleek, end-to-end screen. The TV (which technically measures 76.7 inches diagonally) uses over 33 million self-illuminating pixels that provide over a billion color combinations, with perfect blacks and incredible contrasts. What it means: Every 76.7 inches of the screen is crisp, detailed, and correct, with no blurring or fading. While cheaper TVs focus the action in the center of the screen (and often get blurry around the edges), LG’s OLED TV creates crisp, vivid images, even from wide angles.

It can be hard to find 8K content, so LG provided me with a link to a special video they produced in collaboration with the American Ballet Theater in New York City, which captures The Nutcracker in stunning 8K quality. It’s no exaggeration to say that the familiar ballet really appeared on the 8K set, with even the fine detail (i.e. texture on the dancers’ costumes) flowing through the display. What was most impressive though, was how realistic and immersive the performance was on screen, as if – and it’s not hyperbole – you were right there, watching every Arabesque and front row clamps. . LG claims this is thanks to the TV’s α9 Gen 3 AI processor, which is specifically designed to power 8K performance. The advanced processor also eliminates any stuttering or lag, creating a virtually seamless step-to-step, jump-to-jump viewing experience. The movement was impeccably clear and precise, and it was easy to make out everything onscreen, even in the sequences and faster laps.

After watching The Nutcracker in 8K, I found myself watching 8K videos on YouTube (one of the few streaming sites with real 8K content). LG SIGNATURE ZX supports HEVC, AV1 and VP9 codecs, so it is easy to watch 8K YouTube videos or, for example, 8K videos from USB stick. Even content that is not in 8K is automatically scaled to a resolution as close to 8K as possible. For me that meant a night of watching nature docs on YouTube, then moving on to favorite action sequences and chase scenes from movies like Joker and the last of Christopher Nolan, Principle.

The 8K upscaling paired with LG’s OLED technology meant smooth action and well-defined images created from a wide palette of colors. While watching a nature documentary on the Pacific Islands, each ripple in the ocean was displayed in a different shade of blue, making it incredibly realistic. This opening heist scene of Joker? LG’s OLED Motion technology made it spin and spin on the screen without any stuttering, while the 8K resolution added an intensity and clarity to the scene that I had never experienced in previous viewings of the film. The same vivid colors and the same striking images popped off the screen while watching an NFL game, where the action was fluid and stutter-free. A note: I tried to rewatch the infamous “Long Night” episode of The iron Throne and it was still dark so i think Had director of photography and not my TV.

The reality is that there still isn’t a lot of 8K content out there, but that shouldn’t stop you from considering this TV. Even on “normal” content, LG’s intuitive 8K technology still elevates everything you see. In fact, LG says its SIGNATURE OLED 8K TVs exceed the industry’s official 8K Ultra HD definition, defined by the Consumer Technology Association. From the moment you turn on the TV, you will notice an immediate difference in the quality of what you are watching.

Everything is packaged in an ultra slim design with a minimalist bezel thinner than most non-8K sets in the market today. The 77 inch set has been a conversation starter for anyone who has walked into my family room, and it’s an awesome display piece for movie buffs and design aficionados.

If you are looking for a truly awesome TV for 2021 and want to outfit your home entertainment system with the latest technology in the market, this is the TV for you. With a price tag of $ 19,999 (easy financing is available through Best Buy), it’s not cheap, but considering all the time we spend at home watching TV these days, consider that to be an investment to improve not only your streaming quality, but also your quality. life during quarantine too.
