The 49ers will be without 15 starters on Sunday against the Seahawks.
2 best QB prospects declare themselves for NFL draft
The 49ers could be in the market for a quarterback in this year’s draft and two of the top potential quarterbacks have officially declared.
Kyle Trask of Florida said Dec. 31, and Zach Wilson of BYU said the next day. Both players were due to enter this year’s draft after good seasons. Trask is a senior while Wilson will be leaving school after his freshman year.
The 49ers’ shot under center is their biggest offseason story. Whether they do it early or wait until Day 2 or 3, it seems likely that San Francisco will draft a quarterback this year with Nick Mullens and CJ Beathard both set for free agency.
Here’s what players and coaches thought of 49ers defensive coordinator Pete Carroll in the ’90s
Nowadays, you know Carroll as the caller of the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning signal who also started a dynasty in the early 2000s at the University of Southern California. On Sunday, the Niners will wrap up their 2020 campaign against the Carroll Seahawks, who just won the NFC West. But in 1995, he was coming off a one-year under-par for the New York Jets, which ended with a 6-10 record and sour grapes.
“When was the last time they had a winning season?” Carroll asked about the Jets after he was fired – a fair question that still rings true today. “There were a lot of staff who didn’t make it through their first year, but that’s the deal (from then owner Leon Hess) and his choice.”
Jimmy G’s future with 49ers focuses more
The 49ers won’t ask him to take a pay cut. This is not what it is about. Garoppolo’s contract structure gives the 49ers a lot of flexibility.
He is expected to be $ 26.9 million from next year’s cap, including $ 25.5 million in salary and bonuses. That’s why it would be easy for the team to leave Garoppolo this offseason. There would be very little ceiling acceleration if they traded it.
When the 49ers decide that Garoppolo will definitely be back with the club, that’s when they can rework his contract. The 49ers can easily convert a large chunk of his $ 25.5 million salary into upfront cash. This accounting maneuver would push most of the ceiling reached to 2022, the last year of his contract and a year when the ceiling should experience a significant increase.
2021 NFL Mock Draft: 49ers replace Jimmy Garoppolo, Patriots add Kyle Pitts, Cowboys grab cornerback
PROJECTED TEAM
San Francisco PROSPECT RNK 12th POSITION RNK 4th
Kyle Shanahan’s lack of commitment to Jimmy Garoppolo is telling. If they find a better option at the job, they will take it. Trey Lance is a work in progress, but the traits present an intriguing match with Shanahan’s offense.
Josh Rosen could see the field for 49ers in season finale
Kyle Shanahan told his presser on Friday that he wanted to get three quarters together for Sunday’s game. Josh Johnson will replace CJ Beathard with Rosen as the third string. On the surface, it looks like there’s no way Rosen can see the field.
However, I would not rule out this possibility.
Shanahan is surely interested to see everything Rosen has learned over the two weeks after being with the team. I would even say he must see Rosen a bit. The 49ers have nothing to lose in this game, so three-quarters could even be deployed there.
Shanahan should treat his quarterbacks like a manager does with his pitchers. Let the starter play half the game, then give the relief pitchers (quarterbacks) one inning (quarterback) each. If Shanahan was comfortable enough then I would just give Rosen the second half and not play Johnson who is a career substitute. There is nothing to learn with Johnson.
