Jim Schwartz plans to retire, won’t return to Eagles in 2021

Doug Pederson said this week that he expects to coach the Eagles in 2021, and that he will at least have a key place on his coaching staff.

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz intends to allow his contract to expire after Sunday’s final against Washington and take a year off from training, sources say.

Schwartz, 54, told those close to him that he would consider retiring after a 32-year coaching career, including 28 years in the NFL and a Super Bowl victory three years ago with the Eagles.

One of the NFL’s most respected defensive coaches, Schwartz is still viewed as highly regarded by the Eagles, who have already approached him for overtime. But after facing several recent hip and eye surgeries, Schwartz believes now is the right time for him to step away from the everyday, at least in the short term, according to the sources.

Schwartz previously spent five seasons as the Lions head coach from 2009 to 2013, compiling a 29-51 record with a trip to the playoffs in 2011. He received head coaching interest as recently as last year when he interviewed for the Browns job that went to Kevin Stefanski.

The Eagles stumbled 4-10-1 this season and were eliminated from the playoffs with last week’s loss to Dallas.

This week, Schwartz said the Eagles were to have a “hatless rule” on Sunday – denying Washington a chance to celebrate the NFC East title with a win in Philadelphia. It turns out this will be Schwartz’s last game with the Eagles.
