Patriots growl weighs on Adam Gase’s probable Jets final

The Jets left Gillette Stadium two years ago after a 38-3 loss at the end of their season, and they fired head coach Todd Bowles hours later.

They hired Adam Gase less than two weeks later, hoping he could put the franchise back on a winning track. That didn’t happen, and now Gase again leads the Jets to Gillette Stadium for the final game of the season and what will almost certainly be his last game as a head coach.

There’s no doubt the Jets will shoot Gase on Sunday night or Monday morning, after a poor two-year run as a coach. Gase is 9-22 in that game as the Jets head coach, 2-13 this season. His offense is ranked No. 32 in the league for a second straight season, and quarterback Sam Darnold has not improved under his watch.

This is all an easy decision for Team CEO Christopher Johnson. Gase has done his best to ignore his professional status and continue to prepare the team. He has done a good job, having won the last two games after starting the year 0-13.

“I learned probably at the age of 22, Nick Saban said to me, ‘You do your job until someone tells you different,’” Gase said last week. “So that’s what I’m going to focus on, and my job is to get ready to leave for this Sunday and try to win a game.”

Speculation about Gase’s employment status is nothing new. The Jets hired him a few days after he was fired by the Dolphins. He was unpopular with fans from the start, and calls were made for him to be fired early in his first season.

“I mean, that’s what it is,” Gase said, “I’ve been here for two years, [and] I think it started around week 6 last year.

Another interesting storyline this week was the praise that Patriots coach Bill Belichick gave Gase. The Patriots (6-9) are having their worst season since 2000. There could be changes to Belichick’s squad after this season, and there is a belief in Boston that Belichick might want to hire Gase.

“I have a lot of respect for Adam. I think he’s a very good coach, ”Belichick said last week. “He’s always been difficult to train. He always made it difficult for our defense. … I think he did a great job.

So Gase could be in his last game with the Jets, but he could be coaching at Gillette again soon.
