2021 kicks off with a formidable fight at the lightweight crossroads this afternoon (Saturday, January 2, 2021) as social media sensation Ryan Garcia throws himself in with Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell for the provisional WBC title.

Garcia, 22, considered by some to be one of the best young talents in the sport, viciously eliminated his last two opponents in 2:58 combined. However, he took a considerable step forward in the competition against Campbell; the Englishman’s only uncommitted losses came to multi-division champion Jorge Linares, to whom he fell by split decision in 2017, and the incomparable Vasiliy Lomachenko last year.
The winner, alongside veteran Javier Fortuna, will be in line to take on Devin Haney for the full WBC title. This should not be confused with the recently won “franchise” title for Teofimo Lopez. Don’t overthink it.
In a previous action, Alvarado brothers René and Felix will defend their respective titles against Roger Gutierrez and former minimum weight champion DeeJay Kriel. Former WBO super middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn will also be in action, taking on traveler Ashleigh Curry.

Round one: Garcia hits the body to start. The left hook fails as he tries to bring Campbell down. Campbell also sends blows. Stuck early in the corner, turn and shoot the body. Good left bottom met by a Garcia jab. Good exchange and Garcia wins a cross. Halfway through. Three pieces goes high-low. Campbell throws a trio in return. Garcia brings him back to the ropes, bounces the punches on the guard. Campbell digs another to the left of the body. Good commerce in the center and Garcia sticks out his tongue. Another body shot by Campbell. 10-9 Campbell.
Second round: Campbell with another to the left of the body. He puts his head foot outside, lands another. Garcia tries a 1-2-3. Jab exchange. The left hook lands for him and he opens onto the ropes. Campbell goes low-up with his left hand. He intervenes in the central ring and places Garcia with a left top. It’s a pretty tough reversal but it’s in a long time. Straight to the left floor, remaining patient. Overhand fails. Garcia places a hook on the body. Clinch. A cute little check hook connects. 10-8, 20-17 Campbell.
Third round: Exchange blows at the start of the round. Garcia tries a 1-2, lands a right to the body. Campbell hits the body. Left glance by Campbell, who absorbs a 1-2. Garcia’s high-low. Halfway through. Garcia lands a cross, eats a check hook. Body shot. Campbell goes low-up with his left hand. Garcia tries to open up in the corner. 1-2 from Campbell. Jab, left over shortly after. Garcia goes to the body on the ropes. 10-9 Garcia, 29-27 Campbell.
Fourth round: The backlash pushes Garcia back. 1-2 from Campbell, clinch. The Garcia combo fails. Campbell cautioned against a limit low shot. Garcia tries a three-piece, has a two-piece comeback. Another body shot down by Campbell encountered a 2-3. Good 1-2 by Garcia. Campebll with another body shot, absorbs some rights. Halfway through. Campbell’s body shot. Clinch. Again, Campbell goes down. Left counter at the top. Clinch. Two more body shots, then another pair. Garcia shoots, met by a left to the body. 10-9, 39-36 Campbell.
Fifth round: fierce exchange in the center. Campbell with a hard blow. Combination in close most of the time blocked. 1-2 to the body. Garcia goes high-low with a 2-3. Campbell to the body, takes low blows in return. Campbell tries a combo. Halfway through. 2-3. Garcia with a right to the body. A good advance to the right, the left flyover comes back to him. Campbell’s low-high 1-2. He tries a series of lefts. Good combination by Garcia. The hard hook on the bell visibly hurts Campbell. 10-9 Garcia, 48-46 Campbell.
Sixth round: Garcia goes out in slugging. Long snow showers. Clinch. Campbell pothots in the center after surviving. Straight ahead next to Garcia. Combination of lands for Campbell. Body jabs. Garcia combo stuck. Halfway through. 1-2 by Garcia, who takes a three-piece in return. Campbell hits the body. Garcia check hook, tries to rip it off on the ropes. Campbell blows him up with a blow to the left and a power blow in return. Body jab. Garcia with a hook at the bottom. 10-9, 58-55 Campbell.
Round seven: short trade in the center to start. Campbell hits the body. Jabs upstairs. Garcia passes a crossing to the right through the guard. The two land straight lines. Campbell to the body. Good left hook from Garcia, advancing on the ropes. Campbell straight cross and shot to the body. 1-2 at the halfway point. Body shots encountered by a vicious Garcia who sends the Briton to his knees. He can’t beat the count and Garcia has the knockout back.
Final result: Garcia defeats. Campbell by KO
