When the deputies enter the house, at least two women are seen kneeling on the living room floor with their hands raised. A shirtless man is seen walking down the stairs and is invited into the living room. We can hear a woman say to members of Parliament: “I have young children”.
Over the next few minutes, MPs are seen gathering the rest of the occupants in the living room. A total of four women, two men and three boys appear to be at home.
One of the women tells MPs that one of the children has special needs and at one point the MP carrying the body camera carries a small child up the stairs into the living room.
One of the women asks if MPs are in a position to tell them anything about the search and at one point, a “Minneapolis shooting.” A deputy tells them that investigators will be arriving to speak to them and that “we don’t know” if the search has anything to do with the shooting.
About 14 minutes after the video begins, MPs begin to tie up adults in the living room. A woman asks: “Are you going to shut up the children?” and a deputy answers: “No”. One of the women calls the MPs “racist bitches” while holding people back in the room.
A deputy calls to say, “Make sure the 18-year-old is handcuffed behind his back.” He was the only one in the video who appears to be handcuffed behind his back. He was also the only one who appeared to have been tapped.
Around twenty minutes, one of the deputies asks if anyone needs medical attention. Nobody answered. The assistant wearing the body camera then walks around and writes down each person’s name and date of birth, and the video ends shortly after when the assistant walks out the front door.
The house search came the morning after police shot Idd down in a shooting around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at a Holiday gas station at 36th Street East and Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis.
Body-worn camera footage that the Minneapolis Police Department released the day after filming showed team cars boxing in a white sedan in the gas station parking lot. The glass on the driver’s side window appears to be shattering outward and officers begin to shoot the vehicle.
Idd was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman who was in the passenger seat was not injured and no police were injured either, police said.
Bodycam video posted within 24 hours as part of the emerging trend at MPD
This was the second body camera video to be released this week in connection with Idd in what appears to be an effort to maintain transparency following the first police murder since George Floyd’s death on May 25. The Minneapolis Police Department released video of the shooting. itself within 24 hours. Video of the search warrant was released just over two days after this happened.
In a statement, Sheriff Hutchinson said he made video of the raid available to shed light on allegations that people at the house were treated inhumanely. Much of this criticism has been voiced within the Muslim community.
The Minnesota section of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) released a statement Thursday accusing the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office of improper conduct during the raid and demanding a “transparent investigation.” The statement said “the terrifying home raid … could have resulted in tragedy.”
State Senator-elect Omar Fateh, DFL-Minneapolis, whose Senate district encompasses the Holiday gas station where Idd was shot, said deputies handcuffed Idd’s family during the search and did not give them announced his death only after the end of the investigation.
“This type of treatment for a bereaved family is inhuman and unacceptable,” Fatah said in a statement. “The police have lost public trust, especially within the BIPOC communities. My heart hurts for Dolal Idd’s family.”
