The Chargers enter Week 17 with nothing to play. With a handful of starters set to miss the season finale, this should be a chance for some players to play a bigger role on game day.
That being said, here are six players who can help themselves with good performances against the Chiefs:
FS Nasir Adderley
The Chargers drafted Adderley in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft in hopes of teaming him up with Derwin James to create a dynamic safety tandem. Sadly, Adderley’s rookie season was short-lived as a hamstring injury kept him out for most of the season. Fast forward to this season, its second season hasn’t been all the sun and the rainbows. Adderley’s covering skills have been poor (41.5 overall, per Pro Football Focus) and he has experienced a handful of missed tackles. He will have the opportunity to clean some of it during the season finale.
RB Joshua Kelley
Despite other positional needs ahead of Day 3 of the 2020 Draft, Los Angeles opted to roll the dice on a running back to congratulate Austin Ekeler. I was convinced Kelley was bound to have a big season, given his production in college and the traits he possessed. The former UCLA product erupted during the season opener, but has been silent since then, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry in over 100 attempts. Kelley, who was in good health last week, is scheduled to play on Sunday. This will be an opportunity for him to show that we can count on him in the rotation next season.
DT Jerry Tillery
The Chargers drafted Tillery in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, hoping he would be a dominant inside passing defender. Tillery flashed here and there in his rookie season, but he received an assist because he didn’t have a full offseason to prepare as he was recovering from a shoulder injury. Tillery made a statement when opening the Year 2 season, looking like an absolute force. However, since then it still has not taken off. Tillery committed a series of unnecessary penalties and his presence on the pitch was hit or miss. The team experimented with him as an edge rusher, where he could have a better future since he was not strong against the race. Can he give fans a taste of dominance on Sunday?
OL Sam Tevi, Dan Feeney, Forrest Lamp
These three offensive linemen will be free agents at the end of the season. After making the switch from the right side to the left side, Tevi turned out fine. He’s serviceable, but I think the Chargers need a basic left tackle. The lamp shone early, but was inconsistent throughout, with the majority of its issues occurring in pass protection. Like Lamp, Feeney was solid at the start of the season, but has slowly regressed. Feeney sustained elbow and knee injuries which could have hampered his game. Either way, this will be the last move for the trio to prove itself.
