The news of the audio sparked backlash among critics of Trump, including some Republicans and Democrats who allege the president has committed a criminal act that constitutes grounds for impeachment.

Conway, founder of the anti-Trump political action group The Lincoln Project and a regular detractor of the president, said on MSNBC that motives outside of overturning the election result may have led to Trump’s call for Raffensperger.

“He’s absolutely desperate to avoid stepping down on Jan. 20, and he’s delusional in the sense that he thinks that’s the way to do it,” Conway said. “And the reason he’s desperate, frankly, is because something more than having to leave the White House grounds is happening on January 20. Something more important. He loses his immunity from criminal liability on January 20. “
