“Members of Congress’ plan to reject presidential certification makes a mockery of our system and who we are as Americans,” Hogan said.

Hogan argued that Trump and his legal team “had every opportunity to provide evidence to support their allegations” of widespread voter fraud in the election, but “they did not.”

“Their claims have been categorically rejected by judges appointed by Trump and by a Justice Department appointed by Trump,” the GOP governor said.

“Whether you like the result or not, the process worked the way it always has,” he said. “What doesn’t work is that far too many politicians in Washington seem to have forgotten the basic premise that they are beholden to the people, not the other way around.

The Republican governor, who voted for late former President Reagan in that election, has expressed disapproval as several Republicans in the House and Senate consider disrupting Congressional certification of Biden’s victory on Wednesday by contesting the vote of the electoral college.

Congressional certification of the Electoral College is usually a formality, but the dozens of Republicans in both houses aim to garner enough support for objections to the vote to send the matter back to the predominantly Republican state legislatures.

But the effort is unlikely to nullify the election as Democrats control the House and several Republican leaders and senators have indicated they will not support the move.

Trump refused to concede to Biden despite Biden being widely recognized as the president-elect since November 7. Instead, Trump and his legal team challenged the election results, including through unsuccessful prosecutions, citing unsubstantiated allegations of widespread voter fraud.
