Realistic Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today released a comprehensive new report focusing on what to expect from Apple in 2021. The analyst says Apple will launch its first augmented reality device in 2021, alongside AirTag item trackers and much more.
AirTags have been rumored for over a year now, and despite several reports suggesting a release, Apple has remained silent on the fate of the accessory. Nonetheless, Kuo doubles the existence of AirTags in today’s report, suggesting that the long-awaited item tracking will be released in 2021.
For those who aren’t familiar, AirTags should be Apple’s competition for Tile object trackers. Users will be able to attach an AirTag tracker to something like a backpack and locate it in the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Elsewhere, Kuo is widely claiming that Apple will launch some sort of augmented reality device in 2021. Details here aren’t clear, but Kuo has previously said that Apple’s first generation of AR glasses will be heavily reliant on the iPhone.
Kuo has reported in the past that AR glasses will essentially act as a display only with the actual computing, rendering, internet connectivity, and location services coming from the iPhone in the user’s pocket.
As for the rest of the Apple product line, Kuo says Apple will continue to transition to Apple Silicon in the Mac line in 2021. It will also undertake a transition to mini LED displays on the iPad Pro and Mac lines. The analyst previously said that Apple will release redesigned 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models in 2021, both featuring mini LED display technology and Apple silicon inside.
On the iPad side, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is expected to be the first iPad to switch to the mini-LED, with reports indicating that it could be announced in the first quarter of 2021.
Kuo also corroborates that new AirPods are on the way in 2021. Rumor has it that the AirPods Pro Lite will replace the non-Pro AirPods in the Apple line. They would feature a similar or identical design to the current AirPods Pro, meaning they would be in-ear and likely include different sizes of tips in the box.
