January update improves Pixel 5 / 4a / 5G auto brightness

Google is following last month’s big Pixel Feature Drop with a bugfixer. The January update fixes six issues for the Pixel 5 and other current Google phones.

An audio fix exclusive to the Pixel 5 is “further tuning and improvements to the volume level of system sounds,” while “speaker noise in some scenarios” has been fixed for the Pixel 4a 5G.

Google’s 2020 devices – including the Pixel 4a – also get “new enhancements for automatic brightness response under certain lighting conditions.” All three phones use under-display ambient light sensors.

All other phones (Pixel 3 / XL, 3a / XL.4 / XL, 4a, 4a 5G and 5) benefit from the following improvements:

  • Fixed an issue causing the burial to restart in some apps
  • Additional improvements to the automatic rotation response in certain device orientations
  • Fixed an issue preventing calls on some MVNO networks

Press the Check for update button in the system settings to immediately extract the OTA. On the Pixel 5, this January update comes in at 27.23M, which is bigger than normal.

Meanwhile, Google’s latest phones drop to just two versions. After five at the end of last year, there’s only one Verizon-specific fix and the variant for everyone. Additionally, the US operator’s update should be available today rather than being delayed for a week.
