DC National Guard activated to respond to pro-Trump protests

About 340 staff will be activated to help police control crowds at metro stations and enforce street closures, the National Guard said in a statement.

The context: Weeks of protests erupted in the capital this summer over the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. While some of the early protests included looting and damage to local businesses, Bowser never called the National Guard.

Against the mayor’s wishes, Trump ordered Guard staff to travel to town, where the military has faced backlash for using overly aggressive crowd control tactics against peaceful protesters, including including helicopters flying low over the city to create rotor wash, an action used in conflicts overseas.
