Like most beautiful things, this custom PS2-inspired PS5 won’t be long for this world when it goes on sale later this week.
SUP3R5 is releasing a grand total of 304 “retro-inspired” PS5s on Friday, January 8 at exactly 12:00 p.m. PST / 3:00 p.m. EST / 8:00 p.m. GMT. Consoles ship internationally, but you’ll pay more if you live outside of the United States. Of course, if you’re already selling a custom tagged PS5, you’re probably not concerned about shipping costs.
You can get the PS2-themed PS5 with disk drive and DualSense controller for $ 649 (vs. $ 499 retail), and that comes with colorized logo inserts, or if you just want the controller, you can get the custom DualSense alone for $ 99 ($ 70 retail). The consoles are expected to ship in late spring 2021, but SUP3R5 says the schedule “may change based on availability.”
A few important points to note: Since manufacturers will have to completely disassemble the DualSense, your manufacturer’s warranty will be voided during the customization process. The PS5 itself will not be disassembled, so you will keep the console warranty. SUP3R5 does not offer its own warranty, but assures customers that it will do its best to resolve “functional or cosmetic issues with retro conversion”.
If you’re worried that those 300 PS2-themed precious PS5s will be immediately devoured by scalpers, SUP3R5 says it will take steps to get around the problem. In addition to “security measures”, console controls will be limited to one per household, while controllers will be limited to two units per household.
