You can call me a sore loser, I don’t care but it’s twice in the past six years that a Clemson soccer player has been the best player in the country, and the prize that’s supposed to represent a such player went to someone else.
While many fans will continue to say that they don’t care about this award since Deshaun Watson was robbed a few years ago, the fact remains that gamers do care and, like Watson, Trevor Lawrence has been robbed.
How good was Trevor Lawrence in 2020? Well, unlike Mac Jones, Kyle Trask, and winner DeVonta Smith, Lawrence wasn’t surrounded by NFL first-round talent. Instead, Lawrence pitched players who were upcoming substitutes this summer and he helped them achieve career seasons as seniors.
Don’t take anything away from Smith, Jones or Trask because they were all fantastic in 2020, but none of them was Trevor Lawrence.
You saw in the Cotton Bowl how bad Trask was without his starting pass receivers, luckily for Mac Jones you won’t get to see him without his. Smith wasn’t WR1 on his own team until Jaylen Waddle was injured, then Smith did what all great players do and seized the opportunity.
If Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson weren’t worthy, will a Clemson player win a Heisman?
There is no doubt that Dabo Swinney played a big part in Trevor not winning the award and by that I mean there were many voters who expressed their dislike of Swinney on Trevor for this award. .
We’ve seen voters like Dan Wolken and David Hale write song after song about Swinney and there’s no doubt their votes were swayed. There were many more in the country than these two, they turned out to be the most prominent.
Heisman’s chances in early 2021 projected second-year starter DJ Uiagalelei, ranked second behind Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler. He will also face UNC quarterback Sam Howell, Miami D’eriq King and USC quarterback Kedon Slovis.
If a quarterback who went 34-2 as a college starter, threw for 10,098 yards with 90 touchdowns and just 17 interceptions never had a legitimate shot at winning the award, how is someone in orange and purple doing it?
While Trevor Lawrence was not the Heisman winner, he still has the chance to win the Maxwell National Player of the Year Award and the Davey O’Brien Award for Best Country Quarterback.
Hopefully these voters will do a much better job of recognizing the best college football player than the Heisman.
