New York Giants co-owner John Mara officially announced Wednesday that Dave Gettleman is staying for a fourth season as general manager. Mara simply said that Gettleman was “coming back”.
The Giants have gone 15-33 over Gettleman’s three seasons as general manager, with double-digit losses every season.
Mara said he wanted to see progress this season and did so, despite going 6-10 in Joe Judge’s rookie season as NFL head coach.
“There is a different feeling in the building than there has been in a number of years,” said Mara.
Mara said he liked what he saw in the working relationship between his soon-to-be 70-year-old general manager and his head coach who had just turned 39. Mara said the two “worked very well together”.
“I like the combination we have right now and I don’t see any reason to break that,” Mara said. “We have the basis for something that can be very effective in the future.”
Mara said if the Giants haven’t won enough games, they’ve made enough progress “to justify staying the course.”
