Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro may be a stellar smartphone, but it faces stiff competition from the Samsung Galaxy S21. And new leaks suggest price drops for Samsung’s next flagship that could put Apple’s high-end iPhone at risk.
Pricing for the Galaxy S21 series was revealed prematurely by Belgian mobile operator Voo, which posted European price tags for the entire range. The company quickly removed the list, but not before the Twitter user Jordan82 took a few screenshots and uploaded them, revealing some good news.
The starting prices of the three available models are respectively € 849, € 1,049 and € 1,399. These versions have 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage in the case of the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus, and 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage in the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
Comparatively, in Belgium the iPhone 12 Pro starts at € 899, which means the base Galaxy S21 cuts it down, provided the prices disclosed are correct.
This was reinforced by a report from ETNews, which noted that the starting price of the Galaxy S21 in South Korea will be 990,000 won. This works out to around $ 904, which reduces not only the $ 999 US price of the iPhone 12 Pro, but also the Galaxy S20’s $ 999 introductory price.
Samsung Galaxy S21, S21 Plus, S21 Ultra price leak
Model | RAM / storage | Price |
---|---|---|
Galaxy s21 | 8 GB / 128 GB | 849 € or around 904 $ |
Galaxy s21 plus | 8 GB / 128 GB | 1049 € or approximately 1095 $ |
Galaxy S21 Ultra | 12 GB / 256 GB | € 1399 or around $ 1399 |
Converting these prices to dollars or pounds sterling will not take into account regional price differences, so let’s compare them to the Belgian prices for the Galaxy s20.
The MSRPs for the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra are € 999, € 1099 and € 1399 respectively. This shows that Samsung may lower the price of its new phones as previous rumors claimed, but only for the two cheaper models.
On the South Korean price side, the Galaxy S21 Plus is expected to cost 1,199,000 won, or around $ 1,095, cheaper than the Galaxy S20 Plus of $ 1,199. It should be noted that these conversions aren’t exact so we have to take them with a pinch of salt, but they follow previous rumors of a Galaxy S21 Plus and S21 Plus price drop.
The price drop makes sense given that Samsung lowered the display resolution and the amount of RAM between the Galaxy S20 and S21. However, users will have a powerful Snapdragon 888 processor, three rear cameras, and a 4000mAh or 4800mAh battery.
The top-of-the-line Galaxy S21 Ultra would be the only model to boot with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The S21 Ultra is also expected to offer a sharper Quad HD display as well as two telephoto lenses (3x and 10x).
A bit confusing, the Voo leak for the S21 Ultra has its higher European price tag than the Galaxy S20 Ultra which started at € 1,349. But the South Korean price is expected to be 1,450,000 won, or about $ 1,324, which is cheaper than the S20 Ultra’s price of 1,595,000 won and $ 1,399.
Regional differences could be at play here, and we’ve heard other reports that the S21 Ultra will be priced higher than its predecessor given that it will have even more premium features, including support for the S. Pen from the Galaxy Note series.
Samsung Galaxy S21 gets more color options
Another leak revealed more colors for the Galaxy S21 series. These are post-launch options depending on the leaker Ishan Agarwal. That means it could be region-exclusive colourways or potentially the colors Samsung will reveal in the usual mini-refresh it does with its flagship phones a few months after launch.
You can expect some of these additional color options for the Samsung Galaxy S21 series after launch Galaxy S21 + / S21 Plus: RedGalaxy S21 Ultra: Blue, Bronze, Titanium on Country. # GalaxyS21January 6, 2021
There is an additional color for the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus, which Agarwal describes simply as “red”. The S21 Ultra has three other options: blue, bronze and titanium. Bronze looks particularly appealing, considering how beautiful the Mystic Bronze version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is.
Samsung Galaxy S21 will not come with a charger
However, the Galaxy S21 will be missing a charging brick in the box. Ice universe confirmed this arguably frustrating rumor again on Twitter, apparently inspired by Apple’s recent decision to do the same with the iPhone 12 series.
Samsung will cancel the S21 series of chargers. What do you think about this?January 7, 2021
There are compelling arguments for dropping the charger. Making more chargers is bad for the environment, and especially when many users probably already have a working charger at home. It also makes the phones a little cheaper to sell, with the missing Galaxy S21 block possibly being the reason for the Galaxy S20’s small price drop.
The downside to this approach is that users may feel fooled by a standard and crucial part of a new smartphone package. Additionally, although users already have compatible chargers, they might not be able to provide the specific power to quickly charge the Galaxy S21; 25W for the S21 and S21 Plus and possibly up to 45W for the S21 Ultra.
As of today, we’re officially one week away from Samsung’s January 14 event where the Galaxy S21 will debut. Once we’ve had a chance to test it, our Galaxy S21 review will determine if it deserves a spot on our list of the best phones.
