On the last episode of WWE The bump, the panel brought in Triple H to talk about his memories of Royal rumble and what moments of those pay-per-views stood out. The first Rumble they remember was his triumphant return in 2002, when he suffered an eight-month-old quad injury that nearly cost him his ring career. For the former nine-time WWE Champion, that moment 19 years ago solidified his exact position in the business.
“It’s hard to put words to the trip at that point because, you know, there was a high probability that I couldn’t wrestle again,” Triple H said on his 2002 Royal rumble come back. “Coming back and having the comeback I made at Madison Square Garden, and the reaction I had was tremendous. The challenge was: How do I leverage it? So, to get back to the Royal rumble, there is so much sense out there. Not just from an artist’s point of view, but from an athlete’s point of view of validating to be able to do it again. ”
In this specific match, Triple H recalls the excitement he felt in the crowd when his mentor Mr. Perfect entered the event.
“It was awesome! For me, as a fan, Curt was one of the best in-ring performers of all time,” he replied. “When I came to WWE at the time, and Curt was sort of in his first leadership role, [he] helped me get [towards] the Intercontinental title. After leaving WWE to go to WCW, then returning later, it was a weird loop moment. Seeing him there and the reaction he got, it was great. ”
Last month, the wrestling community lost one of its influential corporate spirits when Pat Patterson passed away at 79. With Patterson’s vision of the Royal rumble Living up to the hype since its debut in 1988, Triple H credits the inaugural Intercontinental Champion for his contributions to this annual event.
“[The] Rumble is one of those great matches where he can last as long as he does. And every two minutes there is this surprise every time. Sometimes these surprises are disappointing. Sometimes it’s those ‘Oh my God’ moments, “he started.” They’re a lot of fun to put together because of those moments because you’re constantly looking for how to get that level of excitement. But that’s the genesis thing Pat Patterson put in place. Pat was the creator of the Rumble concept. ”
When he made his return to be a full-time artist in the ring in 2016, Triple H admits that this year has been the toughest part of his career overall.
“Absolutely, because it was completely out of the blue and completely unforeseen in a way,” he noted. “There was a point in time with injuries and everything that was going on in the business where, you know, I kind of got to a place in my career where Vince [McMahon] would joke I was in an emergency, break the glass [guy]. So I would be sitting there with my trunks. He said to me: “Ok. You’re my in an emergency guy’s case, we’re breaking the glass, and here’s what we’re gonna do. And you’re like, ‘Oh, my God.’
“I don’t think I’ve ever done anything more difficult in my career than having times when you don’t struggle for a whole year or a long, very long time. Then you go out and do what it is. at the highest level, you know, to try to add to what you’ve been doing without letting others or yourself down. It’s really one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever faced. pressure was immense. ”
Throughout the month, The Bump will ask its guests what times Royal rumble history were their favorites to participate or to watch. For Triple H, he says the very first Rumble he participated in will forever be his favorite due to the interaction he had with Dory Funk Jr.
“It’s funny. There are times for me in the Rumble… I’ll give you one that was a cool moment for me that no one else would even remember,” he opened. “It was my first Royal rumble, and I was there for a long period of time, and Dory Funk Jr. entered the ring. I don’t remember how long I was in there, but I remember Dory just coming over and grabbing me in the middle of the ring, grabbing me and pulling me around the corner. He said, ‘Take a break, kid. He just started working with me in the area. And, you know, he’s a guy that I grew up watching. For me, having this moment with Dory Jr. was the coolest thing for me ever. ”
