The inmates, aged 19 to 22, were able to reach the roof of the prison and used a “homemade rope to descend the side of the prison,” the statement said.
Prison staff discovered the men disappeared from their cell just before midnight on Sunday, the statement said. All detainees are considered armed and dangerous.
“The Merced County Sheriff’s Office has formed a task force to locate and apprehend these fugitives,” the statement said. “Anyone with information or anyone who sees any of these people is urged not to approach them and to call 9-1-1 immediately.”
The detainees faced a number of charges.
According to the statement, Gabriel Coronado, 19, of Atwater, Calif., Was charged with attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, participating in a criminal street gang, felon in possession of a gun and violation of probation.
Manuel Leon, 21, of Vallejo, Calif., Has been charged with assault with a gun, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, escaping a peace officer – reckless driving, participating in a street gang criminal and carrying a loaded firearm, the statement said.
The sheriff’s office said Andres Rodriguez, Jr., 21, of Planada, Calif., Was charged with attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, participating in a criminal street gang and felon in possession of a gun.
Fabian Roman, 22, of Los Banos, Calif., Was charged with murder, the statement said.
Edgar Ventura, 22, of Portland, Ore., Was being held on charges of possessing a gun, participating in a criminal street gang and violating probation, the statement said.
Jorge Barron, 20, of Atwater, was in jail for violating the probation charge, the statement said.
The sheriff’s office said it would update the public with additional information when available.
