Long before It’s us Season 5, William (Ron Cephas Jones) told Randall that Laurel died of an overdose after giving birth. But during the October 27 premiere, the NBC drama revealed William was wrong. Laurel did not die soon after giving birth.
As the season continued, Laurel’s story seemed to fade into the background. But in the aftermath of the events, Randall accidentally posted a video that went viral. This caught the attention of a man named Hai (Vien Hong), who contacted the city councilor.
Hai claimed to be a close friend of Laurel’s and revealed that she died in May 2015 from breast cancer. Then he told Randall that William really believed Laurel was dead. Hai also wanted to show her the world of Laurel in New Orleans. So Randall offered a visit.
“Hey, how about we come over there?” To see where my mom lived and the things she loved, ”Randall told Hai. “I would love that very much.”

“This is probably the second episode that has a black woman in the center,” Brown said. “We made a backstory for Beth [Susan Kelechi Watson] in the old days. And now here’s the story of Randall’s mother, Laurel.
He continued, “It’s just this reminder that the show has that everyone has a story worth telling. People, when you first meet them, they can come to you as drug addicts. They can be easily returned. But you realize that everyone has a way to go and it’s important to tell the story. “
Brown also hinted that Laurel’s story will go beyond her connection to Randall.
“For Randall in particular, it’s good to know that this is the first time he’s seen his mother’s story as something important in itself. And not just how it relates to him, ”he said.

Meanwhile, creator Dan Fogelman had previously hinted that Laurel’s story would give It’s us fans the answers they were looking for.
“A beautiful, full story is going to be told,” Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly in November 2020. “I think this will be a satisfying and elegant answer to a lot of things, as opposed to something that necessarily raises more questions.”
It’s us Season 5 airs Tuesday nights on NBC.
