PS5 reportedly selling slower than PS4 in some markets

While demand for PlayStation 5 remains quite high, the console has reportedly underperformed its predecessor PS4 in several regions, including the UK and Japan. According to industry analyst @BenjiSales, it seems the reason is that Sony is failing to meet the demand for increased supply. In a follow-up tweet, the analyst says information for all regions is not yet available and it is possible that things may be different in some territories. Still, given some of the lofty goals that Sony cited before the console’s launch, it looks like issues on the production side are hampering the dynamics of the system.

In October, Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s chief financial officer, said the company plans to ship 7.6 million PS5 consoles by March 2021. This number is significantly higher than the 6 million PS4 units the company has shipped. within a similar timeframe. With the PS4 system underperforming in some areas, it will be interesting to see whether or not Sony can make up for lost time!

These supply issues could be a major problem for Sony. If they continue through 2021, it could hurt overall console sales and convince gamers to consider alternative options. Analysts have been divided over whether or not the PS5 can manage to overtake its predecessor. Back in June, Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis predicted that the PS5 wouldn’t sell as many units as the PS4, and predicted the same for the Xbox Series X on Xbox One. However, Japanese analyst Rakuten Securities estimates that lifetime sales of PS5 could exceed 200 million, which would be almost double that of the PS4.

Despite this shaky start, it looks like Sony remains optimistic about the future. During today’s CES presentation, the company again touched on the fact that the PS5 has the biggest launch for all Sony consoles. However, it remains to be seen whether or not this success will continue.
