The chairman of the California Democratic Party has linked a GOP petition to remind Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom of the recent attempted “coup” on the United States Capitol.
“Donald Trump and the California Republicans who encouraged attacks on our US Constitution … are also engaged in the recall effort against Gov. Gavin Newsom,” President Rusty Hicks said at a conference on Tuesday. virtual press release, first reported by Politico.
“This recall effort … should really be called The CA Coup,” he added.

Newsom has been severely criticized by California Republicans for its strict handling of the coronavirus. The state has seen more than 2.7 million cases – a rate that is 70% higher than the next state topped infections. And with 36,000 deaths from the virus, only Texas and New York have experienced higher death rates than California.
Led by former law enforcement official Orrin Heatlie, Republicans collected 1 million of the 1.5 million signatures required by mid-March to trigger a mid-year election.
Critics on social media were quick to condemn the comparison of a political process to the recent mob that attacked the Capitol building.

Hicks brushed aside contempt for the Republican mayor and called him a “California ReTrumplican.”
“What is ‘absolutely shameful’ is a political opportunist who is ready to advance the cause of white supremacists, conspiracy theorists and those who encourage violence on our democratic institutions,” Hicks wrote. “But I guess that’s what it means to be a California ReTrumplican.”
Hicks stuck to his comments, telling Fox News in a statement that Republicans in California are “willing to use this legal process to promote far-right agendas.”
“Including those of some engaged in violence against our democratic institutions,” Hicks continued. “Every potential signer, endorser and funder should be aware of this reality.”
Newsom has remained silent on efforts to recall his governorship, focusing instead on improving the rate of vaccine distribution in his state.
State officials like Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti have blamed the federal government for the slow release of vaccines.
The White House coronavirus task force has repeatedly said it leaves state officials to determine the proper distribution of the vaccine – a challenge for the most populous US state.
California has begun administering mass distribution sites, relying on Los Angeles Dodger and San Diego Padre stadiums as sites to help improve accessibility of vaccines to the public.

Newsom also suggested in a Tuesday night tweet that, following instructions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California may open up access to the vaccine to anyone aged 65 and over.
