Ellen DeGeneres returns to her daytime talk show Wednesday for the first time in 2021 after battling the coronavirus.
DeGeneres, 62, revealed on December 10 that she had tested positive for COVID-19. Despite “feeling good” at the time, she confirmed that she would return to the small screen only after the holidays.
Upon returning to the stage, DeGeneres wished viewers a “Happy New Year” and explained what his experience with COVID-19 was like.
“Obviously a lot of negative things are going on, so I want to talk about something positive instead: my COVID test. So I tested positive before the holidays. I’m fine now, everything is fine. absolutely clear. I want to thank everyone who reached out with kind words of support. I wish I could have hugged you. That would probably have been dangerous and illegal, “DeGeneres laughs.

The daytime host goes on to explain that she learned of her positive test result while in her studio. She said Wednesday’s audience was the same group that was virtually in attendance by mid-December, but due to her diagnosis the episode was postponed.
“So alright, that’s what happened guys. I was about to tape the show you were going to be here for. I had my hair and makeup on and powdered my face and I put on my extensions. Then my assistant Craig walks in and says, “You tested positive for COVID. And then everyone around me ran away. It’s funny, people are really scared. Some are not. I haven’t returned since. Anyway, I left the studio immediately and our COVID security team notified everyone I had been in contact with, ”she explains.
DeGeneres jokes that his executive producer “literally ran full speed out of the lot” after being told of his positive test result.
DeGeneres said she then quarantined her home away from his wife, Portia de Rossi, who was sleeping in a different bed.

“Portia made me sleep in another room on a different bed because she wanted the race car bed to herself,” DeGeneres quipped.
The host went on to share that she slept “16 hours a day” for the first three days of her battle with COVID-19. On the fourth day, she started to experience severe back pain.
“I woke up with back spasms. I thought I pulled a muscle or slept weirdly because I was in a different bed. It just persisted. The doctor gave me painkillers and muscle relaxers – jackpot! Finally, this stuff pays off, “she says.
DeGeneres notes that her back “only got worse” from the pain relievers.
“I felt like I had cracked a rib,” she admits.

She went on to say that her doctor finally put her on a steroid pack in addition to muscle relaxants and pain relievers.
“Here’s the thing about steroids: They make you really fast and really pissed off, so the best thing I decided to do was stay on the muscle relaxers and pain relievers with the steroid pack to balance it out. don’t know if it’s the best way. I’m not a doctor but that’s what I did, “she continues.
DeGeneres adds that she has since heard from other people who have suffered from back pain as a symptom of COVID-19.

“I’m not saying if you have back pain you have COVID but it’s a symptom. It’s the only symptom I’ve had. I don’t have a headache, I haven’t had fever, I have not lost my mind Even if I have worn fangs for a day, then you are the judge, ”she adds.
DeGeneres concludes that she is “very lucky” to be better but remains curious about where she contracted the new coronavirus.
